Father Michael Pfleger, pastor of Saint Sabina’s Parish in Chicago, will be the special guest speaker at Aurora’s annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 21, in the East Aurora High School auditorium, 500 Tomcat Lane, Aurora.
Pfleger has had a close connection to the King family. At the request of Martin Luther King’s widow, Coretta Scott King, Father Pfleger was the keynote speaker for the national Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. commemorative service in 2003. Then in 2006, at the request of the King family, Pfleger was one of the speakers to eulogize Coretta Scott King.
The theme of the Aurora MLK celebration is “Service above Self: Remember! Celebrate! Act!” All Aurora-area students are being asked in advance to participate in a food drive. High school students also are being asked to participate in a day of service at area nursing homes, food pantries and the public library. In addition to the speakers and performances, the King tribute will recognize students who do community service on that day. Admission is free and there is no reserved seating.
