Dec. 17: Gift-Mart at Brady and Bardwell

The City of Aurora is hoping to brighten the holidays for local families in need with its support of the East Aurora Gift-Mart and Toys for Tots campaign organized by the Fox Valley Marines.

The 9thannual East Aurora Gift-Mart program is seeking to collect 10,000 new toys and assemble 1,000 volunteers to conduct toy sales at Brady and Bardwell elementary schools Saturday, Dec. 17. More than 100 area churches and businesses are partnering with Community 4:12 and East Aurora School District 131 for the events.

A separate Gift-Mart will be offered for the first time in Indian Prairie School District 204 at Georgetown Elementary School. As in years past, every parent with a student from Rollins, Beaupre, Brady or Bardwell elementary schools – and now Georgetown as well – will be invited to shop at one of the Gift-Marts set up in a school gymnasium.

By selling donated toys for $2 each, parents that might not be able to purchase gifts for their children will be able to do so at an affordable price. All proceeds from the toy sales will be split among the partner schools to help fund school improvement initiatives. During the past several years, more than $50,000 has been raised for District 131 schools through the Gift-Mart program.

The Gift-Mart offers children’s activities and entertainment, including a visit from Santa Claus. Free gift-wrapping and refreshments also will be provided to patrons.

“I’m continually amazed by the spirit of cooperation that exists within the City of Aurora,” Mayor Tom Weisner said. “To collaborate like this to collect $100,000 worth of new toys year after year for struggling families to provide for their children and then distribute them in a way that raises money for East Side schools is really a great program.”

The public is invited to participate in both toy drives. For the East Aurora Gift-Mart, new, unwrapped toys valued between $5 to $20 should be dropped off by Thursday, Dec. 15 at the following locations:

  • Fred Rodgers Community Center, 501 College Ave.;
  • Aurora City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place; or
  • The City’s Customer Service Center, 3770 McCoy Drive

Some of the area churches that are involved in leading this effort are Community Christian Church, Orchard Valley Community Church, Wheatland Salem Church and Hope Tabernacle Community Church. Top business partners and sponsors include Target and Starbucks as well as many other Aurora area businesses and non-profits – many of which are also drop-off sites – such as Rush Copley Medical Group (and Healthplex), Airtastic Play Land, Athletico, Aurora Skate, Best Buy, Blueberry Hill Pancake House, Cafe 2, Dance Dynamics, DeSarge Danceworld, Jersey Mike’s, Kindercare, Rito’s Mexican Restaurant, The Town Bar & Grill, Vaya Group and the East Aurora School District 131 Board of Education.

For more information about the East Aurora Gift-Mart or to make a tax-deductible financial contribution, visit www.communitychristian.org/giftmart.

Details about the City’s support for the Toys for Tots campaign will be posted on the City’s website, www.aurora-il.org, when they become available.

Dec. 1: Made in Aurora, Vol. 2 at Backthird Audio in downtown Aurora

Aurora, Ill. –Next week, music lovers will get a glimpse behind the scenes of the Fox Valley’s latest – and largest – local music project.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, recording studio Backthird Audio at 67 S. Stolp (behind River's Edge Cafe) will host an open house entitled “Making Made in Aurora.” In September the studio produced "Made in Aurora Vol. 2: City of Lights," a 16-song collaboration featuring almost 50 local musicians on two LPs. The record is slated for release on Black Friday, November 25.

“The album takes just over an hour to listen to – but it took about 200 hours to make,” said studio owner Benjie Hughes, the album’s producer. “We wanted to give the public a taste of what that process is like.” Hughes and recording engineer Kyle Schmidt will discuss the evolution of two very different songs from the album, starting with initial vision and proceeding through the recording process to the final stages. They’ll play samples of the songs in progress to show how each developed.

The studio will also play the record in its entirety at a networking reception.

The open house begins at 4:30pm, with a presentation from 5:30 to 6pm. A second open house will begin at 7:30pm, with presentation at 8pm, for – according to the event’s Facebook page – “musicians, flying reindeer and festive vampires who don't come out until after dark.” The event is free.

Made in Aurora Vol. 2: City of Lights is the second in a series of collaborative album projects spotlighting the musicians and songwriters of Aurora, Illinois, and the surrounding area. The projects were created by Steve Warrenfeltz, who spends a lot of time talking with area musicians in his record store, Kiss the Sky, in downtown Geneva, Illinois. Albums in the series are released in “dual format,” with both vinyl and CD included in one package.

Made in Aurora Vol. 2 features both original holiday music and new recordings of a number of seasonal favorites. It spans a wide variety of American musical styles including blues, country, pop and jazz. There are traditional carols, an 80-year-old blues song – and a song co-written by Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner.

For more information, contact Steve Warrenfeltz at skykiss@sbcglobal.net or Benjie Hughes at Benjie@backthird.com. Album previews, artist information and a track listing are available at www.madeinaurora.com.

*Nov. 4: Benefit for Aurora Hispanic Heritage

Mexican Immigration Exhibit Extended to November 18, 2011

The exhibit “Creating Mexican American Identities: Multiple Voices, Shared Dreams” has been extended until November 18 at the Aurora Historical Society gallery on the second floor of the David L. Pierce Art and History Center, 20 East Downer Place in Aurora.

Comprised of a traveling exhibit from the West Chicago City Museum and historic photos and text assembled by the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board, the exhibit features labels in both English and Spanish.

The exhibit traces Mexican immigration to the area back to the first wave of arrivals, who came in the 1910s and 1920s primarily to work for the railroad. The bulk of the early Mexican residents lived in railroad box cars converted to housing. Later, they moved into homes in the neighborhoods where they worked and raised their families. Their descendants still reside here, many having risen to prominence in the community.

Exhibit hours are noon-4:00pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Admission is free and free off-street parking is available across the street at the Downer/Stolp Parking Deck (have ticket stamped in gift shop). Oct. 31: Trick or Treat Hours for Aurora

The City of Aurora is asking residents to adhere to its official trick-or-treat hours, which are 4 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, and to make safety a top priority when collecting Halloween candy this year.

Parents accompanying their children are encouraged to go out earlier when it still is bright outside. Residents should remember the following Halloween safety tips when it comes to costume selection, trick-or-treating and the candy they choose to eat.

· When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories, look for labels clearly indicating they are flame resistant.

· Carry a flashlight and wear costumes that are bright or reflective while trick-or-treating to help see and others see you. Putting reflective tape on costumes is another option.

· Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls.

· Stay on the sidewalks and look both ways before crossing the street; use established crosswalks wherever possible.

· Check to make sure swords, knives or other props are made of soft or flexible material.

· Collect candy from homes only with a front porch light on; enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult, otherwise stay outside.

· Verify addresses of sex offenders living in your neighborhood by visiting www.isp.state.il.us/sor prior to trick-or-treating.

· Bring a cell phone while trick-or-treating in case of an emergency.

· Eat only factory-wrapped treats; avoid homemade treats unless you know the cook well.
