Nov. 30: Treat the Customer Right at AU

AURORA, Ill. — “Establishing a Customer Focused Environment," a free, public business workshop, will be hosted by Aurora University on Nov. 30.

Andrew Meeks, managing partner at Oak Consulting, will speak at 8 a.m. at the University Banquet Hall at Alumni Hall, 1410 Marseillaise Place. Networking and refreshments are at 7:30 a.m.

Meeks said, "In today's less-than-perfect economy, the importance of the customer cannot be understated. The question is not why companies should be customer focused, but how to do so effectively."

Meeks will discuss proven strategies that have been successfully implemented across multiple industrial and service industries.

The program is sponsored by the AU Human Resources Institution, an educational and networking event presented by the university’s Dunham School of Business and Human Resource Management Systems in Naperville.

Sept 9: Blackhawk statue dedication at WAHS

1937 West High Graduates Invited to Sept. 9 Blackhawk Statue Dedication

It was the Class of 1937 that gave the nickname “Blackhawks” to West Aurora High School. Now surviving members of the class are invited to receive special recognition at the dedication of a new statue of Chief Black Hawk at 9 a.m., Sept. 9, at the high school, 1201 W. New York St., Aurora.

The statue, a gift to the school from the Class of 1958, is a life-sized bronzed bust of Black Hawk sculpted by artist Gareth Curtiss.

Descendants of Black Hawk have been invited to participate in the dedication. Native American dance and drum groups are scheduled to perform.

A plaque in the West High gymnasium foyer commemorates the action taken by the Class of 1937:

"Chief Blackhawk with his tribe of Sac Indians once roamed these prairies of Northern Illinois, and for him Blackhawk Street was named. He was a valiant fighter always loyal to the interests of his people. It is proper, therefore, that we, the class of 1937, bestow upon our own valiant warriors, the athletic teams of West High School, the name of the Blackhawks. May they ever maintain the highest ideals of courageous actions, loyalty, and sportsmanship."

Sept 8: Pond/Basin naturalized planting seminar

Naturalized Basin Presentation

The Village of Montgomery has organized a free educational seminar to inform residents about the Village’s Naturalized Basin Program. The presentation will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 8^th, in the Community Room at the Montgomery Police Station, 10 Civic Center Avenue. This is an opportunity to hear from representatives of Pizzo & Associates, Ltd., the Village’s selected Natural Areas Maintenance Contractor, and get any questions about native plants and naturalized ponds answered.

The program will begin with a classroom-style presentation covering a general description of the naturalized pond program, an informative discussion about the benefits of using native plants in the landscape, and a more technical presentation on what it takes to install and maintain these unique and specialized landscapes. The indoor presentation should last 30-40 minutes, followed by a quick walking tour of the Civic Center Naturalized Pond (weather dependent) guided by Pizzo representatives, where you will be encouraged to see, touch and smell the multitude of native grasses and wildflowers growing around the pond.

Aug 27: Bug Fest

NORTH AURORA – Insects and the fascinating world of bugs will take center stage from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, when the second annual Bug Fest is held at Lippold Park and Red Oak Nature Center.

The free, family-friendly event will feature fun and educational activities with a swarm of bug-related games, demonstrations and crafts. In addition to Lippold Park and Red Oak, the event will utilize the one-half mile stretch of the Fox River Trail that connects the two facilities.

Visitors can park and begin their exploration at either Lippold or Red Oak site. ark. Each site will have Bug Fest guide books available, live music and snacks. Overflow parking is available on Bond Drive – just north of Red Oak and Lippold on Route 25 across from Glenwood Park – with free shuttle service provided.

Children and adults alike will learn about the benefits of bugs and the important roles they play such as pollinating plants and flowers, aerating the soil and serving as a major source in the food chain.

“Bugs hold a bit of intrigue for everybody, and they’re often misunderstood,” said Red Oak facility supervisor Margaret Gazdacka. “They’re actually pretty amazing creatures that play a huge role in nature.”

Red Oak will feature hourly presentations by bug videographer Tony Gustin, creator of the DVD “Who Wants To Be An Entomologist?” Also at Red Oak, Cosley Zoo will be on hand with a collection of live animals from 10 a.m. to noon at the “Predator Pavilion.”

At Lippold, Anderson Pest Control will return with its ever-popular insect zoo, and the Morton Arboretum will have information on Emerald Ash Borer beetles and the destruction they have wreaked in so many parks and neighborhoods.

Sept: Free park district 7-day pass for fitness

AURORA – The Fox Valley Park District is running a “Fall into Fitness” promotion throughout the month of September by offering a free seven-day pass to any of the District’s three fitness centers.

New visitors who take advantage of the free week-long trial will learn about the many health benefits that result from being a fitness club member. The offer is available to guests age 16 and older.

A free seven-day pass can be redeemed at the Eola Community Center (555 S. Eola Road), Prisco Community Center (150 W. Illinois Ave.) and the Vaughan Athletic Center (2121 W. Indian Trail).

We know immigration is a hot topic these days but little did we realize it could lead to record-breaking attendance at our museum exhibits! The Luxembourg exhibit closed just a few days ago and was a blockbuster success. We are proud to follow it up with “Creating Mexican American Identities: Multiple Voices, Shared Dreams”, curated by the West Chicago City Museum and the Aurora Historical Society/Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board and created with funding by the History Channel and the Illinois Humanities Council.

Aurora and West Chicago were early hubs for many Mexican immigrants who were recruited to work for the railroad in the 1920s and made their first homes in box car camps. Since early immigrants rarely have a tradition of written history, the Mexican American story has been recorded here through loaned and donated photographs and oral histories.

We all will find much to reflect upon here.

The exhibit opens on Friday, August 12, 2011 with a free reception from 5:00-7:00pm at the David L. Pierce Art and History Center, 20 East Downer Place. There will be food from local Oaxacan restaurant La Palapa, music and a cash bar.

This is also the closing day of the immensely popular gallery show on the third floor, “Warm Light, Cool Shadows – the Life and Art of Ruth Van Sickle Ford”, so you can catch both exhibits AND our Civil War exhibit before visiting Aurora’s up-and-coming Restaurant Row for dinner. Just a suggestion!

Looking ahead, when the weather turns colder, plan to visit the Tanner House at Oak and Cedar for a thought-provoking and chilling brush with Victorian death culture in the sequel to last autumn’s sellout success. Aug 20: Soul Fest in Aurora

The 34th Annual Soulfest and Black Business Expo will be held at May Street Park on Saturday, August 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with proceeds to benefit Citizens for Neighborhood Improvement (CFNI).

“We are pleased to present this annual event for the community,” said CFNI President Lillian Perry. “The events are a show of pride and accomplishment for the City of Aurora.”

The event showcases soul food, music games and prizes for children with a nominal fee of $12 meal ticket costs for adults and kids hot dog plates for $1.50. There is no admission fee for the Soulfest event which is presented in cooperation with the City of Aurora, State Representative Linda Chapa LaVia, Quad County African American Chamber of Commerce, Fox Valley Park District, CFNI Board, Paul and Bill’s Service Station and various other businesses and individuals.

“The Black Business Expo of the event is in conjunction with the Quad County African American Chamber of Commerce (QCAACC),” said Perry. “Booth space for businesses wanting to exhibit is available for a cost of $50.” To reserve space, businesses will need to submit $50 via check or money order payable to CFNI at 538 N. May Street, Aurora, IL 60506.

“We view our participation as an important aspect of serving our community and providing African American owned businesses the opportunity to market to an established base of support,” said Sanura Young, President of the QCAACC.

Aug 2: National Night Out

On Tuesday, August 2, neighborhoods throughout Aurora are encouraged to join with thousands of communities nationwide for "National Night Out".

From 6-9 p.m., residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights, and spend the evening outside getting to know their neighbors. Citizens have come to enjoy meeting their neighbors, Aurora Police Officers, and City staff members at National Night Out events that range from small gatherings to large neighborhood block parties.

"By partnering together, citizens, police and cooperating City and outside law enforcement agencies have been able to bring Aurora’s crime rate to its lowest level in 33 years", said Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner. "National Night Out gives us an opportunity to celebrate while we reaffirm our commitment to working together to keep Aurora a premiere City to live, work, and raise a family."

2011 marks the 28th annual celebration of National Night Out which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. Last year over 37 million people in the U.S. and Canada joined forces to send the message to criminals that they are organized and fighting back against crime, drugs, and violence. The annual event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.

"A strong neighborhood is a safe neighborhood", said Chief of Police Greg Thomas. "National Night Out affords everyone the opportunity to get to better know their neighbors and send a strong message that crime is not welcome in Aurora."

One headline event of the evening takes place on Aurora’s far east side where the Georgetown Relief Efforts Neighborhood Organization (GRENO) will host their 7th annual National Night Out event. From 6-8 p.m., the entire City is invited to enjoy live music, free hot dogs, chips, and lemonade, at Georgetown Elementary School, 995 Long Grove Drive. The event also features a children’s area including a clown, face painting, balloons, and the Aurora Public Library Bookmobile. Aug 6: Chicagoland Emergency Vehicle Show at Mooseheart

Celebrating their 14th year, the Chicagoland Emergency Vehicle Show has grown to be the midwest’s largest public emergency vehicle show, hosting 200 emergency vehicles throughout the weekend belonging to individual collectors, museums, and government agencies — all in the name of public education. Once again we are pleased to share space with the Kane County Safe Kids Safety Day as well as the North Aurora Days’ “Touch-a-Truck” event.

The Emergency Vehicle Show will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011, from 10am to 4pm on the grounds of “The Child City”, Mooseheart, Illinois. Mooseheart is located between North Aurora and Batavia on Rt. 31. The show entrance will be off Mooseheart Rd. west of Rt. 31 (Lincolnway). Entrance to the event is free to the public. All preregistered and municipal/government vehicles are always free to register. There will be a $20 registration fee for private collectors who with to register on site the day of the show. Registration and vehicle staging begins at 8am. All vehicles are asked to arrive and be staged before the show opens to the public at 10am.

July 15: Downtown Alive! Fan Favorites

The setting will stay the same along the Fox River, but the music scene will shift from blues to rock as Downtown Alive! starts Friday, July 15.

The concert series is presented in conjunction with the Paramount Theatre at North River Street Park. Dbl-Shot will open with high energy 80s rock followed by the Beatles tribute band American English.

July 4: Independence Day in Aurora

Aurora will be painted red, white and blue Monday, July 4 with a full-day of activities for the whole family.

Independence Day will begin with a downtown parade presented by the Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84 in partnership with the City of Aurora.

The event will start with a patriotic ceremony at 9:15 a.m. outside the Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd. The parade will step off at 10 a.m. at the corner of Benton and River streets, marching east to Broadway Avenue, north to Galena Boulevard, west to Stolp Avenue, south to Downer Place and conclude heading west to Middle Avenue.

Father Jerome “Jerry” Leake, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in Aurora, has been named the 2011 Fourth of July Parade Grand Marshal. Father Leake has become a popular figure in Aurora by performing chaplain duties for the City’s Police Department and the community for decades. He has logged more than 30,000 hours on ride-alongs with Aurora police officers and has provided counseling, ministry and comfort to victims and offenders in the aftermath of traumatic situations.

After being severely injured in a police ride-along accident in December, Father Leake completed a rigorous rehabilitation schedule to once again serve the students and more than 800 parishioners at St. Joseph School and Church. He also is back in the squad car on the streets with the Aurora Police Department.

Before coming to St. Joseph Church 14 years ago, Father Leake served as a teacher, coach and assistant principal at Aurora Central Catholic and Rosary high schools.

Groups scheduled to march in the parade include the American Legion Post 84 Band, Chicago Highland Rifles, East Aurora and West Aurora high school marching bands and local Boy and Girl Scouts. Bill Baker will serve as the parade emcee, and the Legacy Girls will perform in the pre-parade ceremony.

Lawn chairs and small hand-held coolers are permitted at the fireworks festivities. Large coolers, alcohol and smoking are prohibited on the shuttle buses. Aurora police officers will be writing citations for anyone possessing or setting off illegal fireworks at the event.

All summer: Free concerts in the park

AURORA – The Fox Valley Park District will stage a series of six free concerts this summer, beginning June 16 with Top 40 country band Smokin’ Gunz at Montgomery Park.

The concerts are a collaborative effort involving the Park District, the City of Aurora and the Village of Montgomery.

All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. and run until 9 p.m. unless noted otherwise. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets. The concert lineup is as follows:

June 16: Smokin’ Gunz at Montgomery Park (River Street and Mill Street, Montgomery) in partnership with the Village of Montgomery. Prior to the show, line dancing lessons from Cathy Vary – instructor at Saddle Up and Dance – will be offered.

June 30: Yorkville Big Band at Montgomery Park (River Street and Mill Street, Montgomery) in partnership with the Village of Montgomery.
July 7: August at McCullough Park (Route 31 and Illinois Avenue, Aurora). Beforehand, The Friends of Aurora's After-School Programs (FAA and Communities in Schools will be selling spaghetti dinners from The Olive Garden to benefit The Hope For Tomorrow Scholarship Fund.

July 14: Gallery at Montgomery Park (River Street and Mill Street, Montgomery) in partnership with the Village of Montgomery. Food from Fay’s Barbeque will be available before the show (presale tickets are $12), courtesy of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce.
